A couple weeks ago, a handful of Prescott House staff members attended an International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals symposium in Phoenix that focused on the treatment of compulsive sexual behaviors; specifically, pornography addiction.
As far as conferences go, this one definitely held our attention.
Even though Prescott House has been helping treat sex addiction for nearly 20 years now, our team wanted to learn more about the nuances of the addiction, especially as it relates to how the internet and technology influence people who are addicted. One of the symposium speakers in particular, Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, spoke directly to that exact topic. His most recent book, Always Turned On: Sex Addiction in the Digital Age, addresses the very real, often damaging role that technology plays in the lives of people who are battling an addiction to sex or pornography.
Weiss, who is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist and renowned human intimacy and digital technology expert, co-wrote Always Turned On (as well as three other books) with Jennifer Schneider, M.D., Ph.D., a physician and award-winning sex addiction researcher. These are two highly respected experts in the field of sex addiction research. Weiss’s symposium workshop covered the theme of their research, which is this: the World Wide Web is really tangling up people who are addicted to sex and porn.
As Weiss explained, with ever-evolving technological advances comes ever-increasing access to sexual experiences on the web. So, people who are addicted to watching porn have unfettered access to it and people who are addicted to sex can reach potential sexual partners with just a few clicks. The omnipresence of smartphones and apps has made this access even easier—and more anonymous. As with any addiction, ease of access to the addictive item or service just adds more tangles to the addiction web.
Technological advancement is truly great in so many ways, but in terms of the impact it has on people trying to overcome sex addiction, it can seem like the enemy. With our extensive experience in treating people who are addicted to sex and porn, Prescott House can help. We understand that, just like substance abuse, compulsive sexual behaviors such as porn addiction require sensitive, deliberate, careful and caring treatment.
