Mental Health Treatment: When Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough

Medication and weekly therapy sessions are vital tools, but for many men, they aren’t enough to break the cycle of deep-seated depression, anxiety, or trauma. If you are struggling to function in your daily life, or finding yourself self-medicating just to get by, you may need a higher level of care. Prescott House provides a structured, immersive environment where you can step away from life’s stressors and focus entirely on healing your mind and spirit—surrounded by a community of men who understand the battle.

When Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough

Many men come to Prescott House after seeing a therapist for months or even years with limited progress. You aren’t "unfixable." You likely just need a different environment to heal.

  • The "One-Hour" Problem: In outpatient therapy, you have one hour to process pain, and then you have to immediately go back to the stress of work, family, and bills. In a residential setting, you have 24/7 space to focus solely on healing.
  • Breaking the Environment: Sometimes, your environment is the trigger. Stepping away from daily stressors allows your nervous system to finally downshift out of "fight or flight" mode.
  • Psychiatric Stabilization: If you are struggling with Bipolar Disorder or severe depression, medication adjustments can be rocky. We provide 24/7 monitoring to ensure you stabilize safely and effectively.

If you or your loved one needs real change, we’re here to help.

Comprehensive Care for Men’s Mental Health

We treat high-acuity mental health challenges. While many of our clients also struggle with substance use (dual diagnosis), we treat the mental health condition as the primary driver.

  • Depression & Mood Disorders: Treating the lethargy, hopelessness, and isolation that comes with Major Depressive Disorder.
  • Anxiety & Panic: Helping men learn to regulate their nervous system without needing to escape or numb out.
  • Complex Trauma (PTSD): Creating a safe container to process childhood or adult trauma that is impacting your current relationships.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Providing the structure and routine necessary to manage the highs and lows of Bipolar I and II.
  • Self-Medicating Behaviors: If you are using alcohol or drugs to cope with the above, we help you replace those chemicals with sustainable coping skills.

Breaking the Silence of Male Depression

Men often handle mental health struggles differently than women. We tend to isolate. We get irritable. We work harder to distract ourselves. At Prescott House, we break that cycle of isolation.

  • You Don’t Have to Wear the Mask: In the outside world, you have to be the strong husband, the reliable employee, the stoic father. Here, you can just be human.
  • Peer Support vs. Isolation: Depression thrives in the dark. Living in a community of men forces you into the light—in a supportive, non-judgmental way. You realize very quickly that you are not the only one struggling.
  • Emotional Literacy: We teach men the vocabulary to identify what they are feeling. It turns out, "angry" isn't the only emotion allowed.

Therapies Designed to Restore Balance

Recovering from a mental health crisis requires a multi-layered approach. We combine advanced psychiatric care with therapies that teach you how to regulate your emotions and navigate stress.

  • Psychiatric Stabilization:Mental health is biological as well as psychological. Our medical team works closely with you to review, adjust, or manage medications to ensure you have a stable chemical baseline to work from.
  • Emotional Regulation (DBT):Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is the gold standard for managing intense emotions. We teach you skills to tolerate distress and regulate your mood without spiraling.
  • Trauma Processing (EMDR):If your anxiety or depression is rooted in past events, talk therapy often isn't enough. EMDR allows the brain to reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their power over your present life.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):Depression lies to you. CBT helps you identify those negative thought loops ("I'm worthless," "It will never get better") and replace them with reality-based thinking.

Your Journey Back to Yourself

Mental health recovery isn't a straight line, but it does require a structured path. Our program is designed to move you from crisis management to sustainable living.

Phase 1: Assessment & Stabilization (Days 1–30)

  • The Goal: Stop the bleeding.
  • The Focus: We focus on getting your medication right, establishing a sleep routine, and calming the nervous system. You disconnect from the stressors of the outside world and just breathe.

Phase 2: Insight & Skill Building (Days 31–90)

  • The Goal: Understand the "Why."
  • The Focus: Why do you react the way you do? Why does the depression hit when it hits? In this phase, you gain insight into your patterns and practice the coping skills (DBT/CBT) needed to change them.

Phase 3: Purpose & Reintegration (Days 90+)

  • The Goal: meaningful living.
  • The Focus: A healthy life requires purpose. We help you transition back into employment, volunteer work, or education, ensuring you can handle real-world stress while still supported by the safety of the house.

This is undoubtedly the best addiction treatment center in the nation. Prescott house does it right, they are professional and caring. The therapists are knowledgeable in the field of addiction and insightful! They assisted my family when we needed it most and they came through when others didn’t. My son recently celebrated 13 months drug and alcohol free! Thank you Prescott House team!

If you're looking for a fresh start and a life building experience. This is the place. Not only is the town of Prescott a beautiful town, the staff at Prescott House are welcoming and clearly have a passion for what they do.I arrived at the Prescott House at the start of 2021 and stayed for both the inpatient and outpatient (aftercare) program. The experienced and professional staff helped me look into things that I never thought of and turn me on to a much more healthy life style.

This is a wonderful location for men, looking for long term sobriety. The staff at the center, truly do care for the patients, they are also treated like family. The staff will go out of their way, to make the men feel welcome and at home. They will receive wonderful treatment and counseling, with a clinical team. The staff will also do whatever possible to help the men out financially, if possible. I would highly recommend this treatment center for any man, truly looking for recovery.

I went to Prescott House a broken man. I didn’t want to go and I didn’t think I needed it. Thank goodness my parents were strong enough to hold that boundary with me. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but this program provided me the structure and therapy I needed to live a better life where I was no longer a slave to substance use. I will forever be grateful for everyone at Prescott House.

As an employee of a high acuity detox in Arizona, I love working with the Prescott House! The entire staff are alumni of the facility, so they have the expertise and life experience that really makes the difference between the Prescott House and other long term treatment centers in the country. The work they do is nothing short of a miracle!

This place saved life. It was it easy by any means but it was exactly what I needed. I can here after I did a 45 inpatient treatment facility and this place really helped me further my recovery. He also helped me get reintegrated into society so when I was able to leave getting a job wasn’t as stressful or anything of that nature. All the staff and counselors are awesome. The meetings out in that area are great, there is not one you can’t find and sometime of the day. If you are planning on a year or so treatment facility for transitional living I would suggest AFTER a 29-45 inpatient program I would suggest P-House, call and reach out to Geoff Patterson and he will guide you in the right direction! If I could give this place more that 5 starts I would!!!! 10 ⭐️!

I can’t thank The P House enough for what it did in my journey. I was in my late forties when I walked into the house. My life had crumbled all around me and I wanted to change my behaviors. After 30 days in a treatment center, I knew I needed something more to make a real change but didn’t know what that would look like. The Prescott House was recommended and after some quick research I committed to 3 months. I left my family and kids to take the chance to change my life. Needless to say, 7 months later, I completed the recovery program they had set for me, and I needed every day of it. Recovery is not a course or a quick fix, it’s a commitment and in my case lots of humility which I was reminded daily I had very little of…lol

Without Prescott House, I would be in jail, an institution, and surely dead. They taught me how to live life on life's terms, not my own. Thank you for helping me save me from myself!

The Prescott House saved my life.  I had struggled with addiction and mental illness for most of my adult life and when I arrived at the P House  I was desperate for help.  When I arrived I was shocked by the circumstances I had found myself in, but the professionalism, friendliness, and competency of the staff helped the transition be as smooth as possible.  The community of men was always supportive and welcoming and the quality of therapy was unparalleled.  At the P House I learned to shed my shame and also learned to love myself and others by feeling fully accepted by everyone in the community.  I honestly can't recommend the program enough - it works if you work it!

I had a strong response to this Spring’s news of a pandemic: Our adult son is not on the street. The thought came to me again and again. Our adult son is not on the street. He is safe. He is healthy. He has the love of a good woman and a precious son. He is serving others as an essential worker. His father and I cannot imagine these last years being possible without his stay at Prescott House. Short-term rehab had not been enough to allow him to heal and begin the journey to the man he is today. The skillful staff at Prescott House provided a living model of life in recovery and the structure and support to pass their knowledge on to our son. They supported us as parents with compassion and gave us hope.
